This module aims to understand first the historical and recent development of East Asia, focusing on changes in economic trades, cultural exchanges and political relations mainly among China, Japan and South Korea. As one of the leading countries of global economy, the country of Japan will be taken as a main focus of the module and development of different industries in Japan is introduced. These are not only main industry sectors, such as heavy industry and IT industry. To understand a base of Japanese economy in a comprehensive way, we will have a look at geographical information of land and regional climate, as well as public infrastructures, for instances, public transport and energy supply. In scaling down the focus to the local level, industries, using local natural resources, are to be viewed. These can be agriculture and fisheries as well as related industries likewise tourism and the production of traditional crafts. The development of these industries are keys for the local economy. For an understanding of its changes, on the other hand, we will see economic and political influences from East Asian countries. Besides the development of Japanese industries, this module also sees the history of environmental problems, which is a part of the history of economic development in Japan.
The exam of this module is composed of two parts. One is the individual presentation (50%, 15 min. including discussion), to be given at the end of the semester. The other is two-page essays or survey reports on two different topics (25% x 2 times), submitted during the semester. The possible topics of presentation and essays are to be announced in the lecture. As a presentation topic, participants may also choose an economic relation between one of the East Asian countries and another country. |
